Through the years in the gutter business I have noticed that many contractors cut this corner. In the earlier 90's contractor's would use nails instead of screws to fasten the gutter brackets to the fascia. Spike and ferrule methods where used in 1980's. A straight bar hanger with a spiral nail where used in the later 80's to later 90's. These to methods would lead to the gutter nails pulling out from expansion and contracting of the aluminum (see info on expansion). In the new millennium the gutter industry started screwing the brackets, resulting in fewer pull a ways. The first hangers didn't have a ribbed profile, so they couldn't hold much weight. Hangers where then redesigned to not only let the gutter expand and contract it would hold more weight. So when you are designing your gutter system keep this in mind.
